Is it possible to achieve up to 50% energy savings with solar thermal systems in hotels, dormitories, and residential complexes?

Solar thermal systems (solar collectors) are one of the fastest-paying energy investments, especially in hotels, dormitories, and residential complexes with high hot water demand. So is “50% savings” really possible? Short answer: Yes, with proper planning, meeting up to 50% of hot water energy needs from solar power is a realistic goal for most facilities. However, the critical point here is that this percentage is generally calculated based on the energy expended for hot water production, not total energy consumption.

The continuous use of showers throughout the day in hotels and dormitories, along with laundry and kitchen loads, makes the energy gained from the sun meaningful. In buildings, especially those with central hot water and circulation systems, solar collectors can significantly reduce the operating time of boilers or heat pumps by performing the “preheating” function.

Three conditions stand out for approaching 50%:

  1. Correct capacity selection: The collector area and storage volume should be calculated based on the number of users and consumption profile.
  2. Reducing heat loss: If there is poor insulation in piping, storage tanks, and circulation lines, the energy gained is lost “along the way.”
  3. Smart automation and hybrid operation: Seasonal heat pump integration and the right control strategy determine efficiency.

As a result, solar thermal systems can provide a significant reduction of 30–50% in hot water costs with proper design, quality equipment, and good operation. The “50%” target is an achievable performance criterion, especially in facilities with high occupancy and regular consumption.
